SETTING THE SCENE
It all started on a late night in Bedstuy, likely between 1-3am. I was sitting cross-legged on the walnut hardwood floors of my brownstone apartment, about a 5-minute walk from Lenny Kravitz’s childhood home. The light from a single amber bulb collided with a pink filter that was illuminated by my Kismas Vintage Lamp, engulfing the space and skewing my awareness of color altogether. I thought the work would turn out more terracotta-esque.
THE CREATIVE PROCESS
I was in such a flow state with this one. I had primed the canvas the day before, honestly not knowing what I’d make of it. But as I sat there, this visceral sensation began to channel its way through me. It was an intuitive feeling that derived from my gut, which is where I consider my deepest senses of creative expression to originate from. Within the span of 30-45 minutes the painting was done.
THE MEANING BEHIND THE WORK
As with most of my artwork, this painting told me what it wanted to be. I didn’t quite discover it’s meaning until later that morning though, when I could finally see it in the light of day. I set it on the floor that was bedside to me before falling asleep. When I cracked my eyes open and turned to look at it for the first time in new light I grew even more in love with the way it had turned out. Stunned by the way the colors collaborated on the textured canvas, it visually spoke to me of spontaneity, elusivity, and abstracted power.
